Kate and Anna McGarrigle are profiled on the CBC's "The Fifth Estate" on April 20, 1977, in a segment narrated by Adrienne Clarkson.

The presentation is amusingly dated in some ways but the segment is interesting because, even though it's very early in their public careers, it lays out quite clearly their attitude toward celebrity that remained largely unchanged from that point on.

There are some nice musical fragments as well as video shots of their family (their mother Gaby, Kate's very young children Rufus and Martha) and friends and collaborators.

  • Priceless piece of history - thank you so much!

  • "... washing the dishes which I still do - - - once a week" - hilarious!

  • Awesome, thanks so much for sharing!

  • What the hell do music critics know? Some things never change.

Proper musicians should not have to compromise and fit into a so-called image that their record company sets for them.

  • This is wonderful....thank you very much for sharing it with new fans.

  • thanks for uploading this! too bad that there isn't a lot more concert footage or true tv specials on them, especially from canadian tv.

  • So very interesting!! It's great to see this piece of musical history.
