Using "either" and "neither"

Maybe it's a Midwest thing, but I was taught to pronounce "either" and "neither" as ˈē-thər and ˈnē-thər. These pronunciations are also listed first in several dictionaries I've checked. Whether this means that these are the preferred pronunciations appears to be a debate unto itself. But I rarely hear the long "e" versions used on U.S. television or by people from the East Coast. Rather it's the long "i" "alternatives", which still sound strange to me no matter how many times I hear them.

You're welcome. Yes, they are very tricky for someone whose first language isn't English. I'm glad this helps. Paul
