Part II - Savin Rock amusement park film shot in 1949. Savin Rock was an amusement park located in West Haven, Connecticut. Much of this video is available on a DVD which can be obtained from the Savin Rock Museum http://www.savinrockmuseum.com/
My father's family lived in West Haven - nine kids. As I watch this video, I keep wondering if any of them were there. I recall my father telling of outings to The Rock. My own memories of the place are very hazy. I think it was already in decline during my childhood, so they didn't go there much.
Interesting - no one in this video is fat. How times have changed!
GREAT footage. I am jealous as I never got to ride those coasters. Was the re-modeled THUNDERBOLT as good as the original with all those swoop turns/drops?
I don't know how to thank you for posting this footage of Savin Rock. It was shot three year after I was born so "The Rock" looks very much as I remember it in my youth. This was an amazing and special place. A world in and of itself.
So many of the people passing by the camera look amazingly like my relatives which I know is pretty unlikely but then again................
Born West Have 1951, Lived on both ends of Summer St, the house next to St Johns and Peter Franks house across from the bus loop. Spent a lot of time as a kid sneaking into the race.s. What a great time growing up there
aahh yes, those were the days were amusement parks werent mostly all roller coasters. some reall rare rides. Such as the Chance Olympic Bobs And The Hrubetz Spitfire. My Kinda Park.
I lived on Hazel St., off of Platt Ave. (1944-1962) Spent alot of time at Savin Rock and went to many of the races. (Stocks and midgets) I worked at Wischert's part time for about 3 years. Saw about 80% of the original "rock" demolished in the early 50"s and Jimmie's built a resturant there. Brings back alot of memories.
