Most of those weren't even 8ft, more like 6ft. But, they where breaking really fast and probably in too many different places, you know like those weird days when the wave doesn't want to break at the same place twice, where you paddle from one place to the other and keep finding yourself in the wrong spot. It's about fun you know.
BTW, this is all from two movies, Brokedown Melody and September sessions, both really good surf films.
