HSC 430 - There are few areas that raise more concern among parents than their child's behavior. While their pediatrician may be able to prescribe an antibiotic to cure a sore throat or an ear infection, solutions for childhood behavior problems are not nearly as clear-cut, nor is there a consensus on the best approach to discipline.

Sam Harris articulates these type of things so well.

...the child is climbing up to the open window, or holding a sharp object in his hand, or beating up his little sister, then don`t spank the child: "just walk away and come back in a few minutes".... ? very wise idea, Mrs. Barbara Howard

As Sam Harris said, we have to ask the following question: Is it a good idea to subject children to pain, violence, and humiliation as a way of promoting healthy emotional development and good behaviour?

I was spanked as a child, I still remember it to today. I'll never ,EVER spank any of my children in the future .

I can respect anyone who chooses not to spank. That being said, I believe I should not be blasted for choosing to use spankings as discipline. Spanking is Biblical. Abuse is NOT. There is a difference between spanking and abuse, although many today don't see it that way.

I was spanked as a child and let me tell you I wouldn't touch my nephews. I was told that I was spanked because they loved me, but is love supposed to be inflicting pain on a child? All I remember are those menacing looks I got and the whippings with a belt always on the butt or thighs. But my Father disciplined us too violently sometimes, by shaking, picking us up and slamming us down in a chair, but he loved to thump us in the head with two fingers, it felt like a rock it was so forceful

@NotNamedJones just because you choose not to spank doesnt' mean you let your kids run wild and undiscipllined. Discipline is teaching, guiding, leading by example, no where does it say to assault or act aggressively. It can be done you just need to educate yourself
