Well, for deep space exploration beyond the orbit of Mars solar power is insufficient and nuclear energy is needed to provide adequate power.
Like the Voyager missions and the New Horizons mission to Pluto which is currently on route...
The New Horizons mission also uses an ion drive in order to get there as quickly as it will.

Armstrong/Cernan two space VIPs in space history.
Both advocates of NUCLEAR POWER IN SPACE.
Can anyone offer a reason these two famous astronauts would promote the use of nuclear power and advanced space propulsion & power in space?
Please offer your opinion...

Incredible! Thank you Dr. Griffin, Mr. Armstrong and Capt. Cernan! Who are the people our children will have as role models in the future! Thank you for your service!
Almost sent me to tears, YES, unfortunately this is the end for the United States in deep human space flight, I undertsand that China will lead the way?... For me, at least someone will, no matter what country, we are all ONE on the iss, we are all one in this world.

@ytmoog Add the MSL rover: 'Curiosity' slated for operation soon on Mars powered with peppy Pu238 in its double MMRTG designed to produce 125 watts of electrical power at the start of the mission and 100 watts after its minimum lifetime of 14 years. The MSL will generate 2.5 kilowatt hours per day compared to the Mars Exploration Rovers which can generate about 0.6 kilowatt hours per day.
Nuclear power has plenty more uses like the NTR Nuclear Thermal Rocket.
