It is with tremendous sorrow that we say goodbye to our beloved African elephant, Zula. Even if we were prepared for her loss, even if we had received some advance notice, the shock and sadness would not be diminished. But the suddenness of Zula's passing has shaken us to our core. Zula, big sister and dearest friend to Tange, the nurturer, mature and kind, known to be gentle to everyone she ever met. On the evening of January 11, 2009, she left us too soon. A deep sorrow is felt by caregivers and elephant family alike. She will be so dearly missed.

  • What music is this? (Please write back! It's really good music!)

  • @ThePowerofElephants This is a licensed stock music piece called "Flying"

  • What exactly do you do with a dead elephant? Bury a trench and hire a forklift? You can't really cremate it, and who would want to really, that would be awkward. And you can't very well just leave it there... Elephants are a mighty burden. But they do so bless us while they're alive!

  • Elephants are buried on Sanctuary grounds, often in a specific area of their habitat they seemed to love the most.

  • @ThePowerofElephants I'd bet a nickel this is John Barry's music. as in Dances With Wolves....... quite distinctive his heartfelt embracing music with the deep rumbling of... an elephant beneath the melody.

  • If I had a choice of people or elephants would chose the later.

  • wonderful xooxox

  • @awesomeH2O

Please don't insult elephants by saying they're like people.

As Daphne Sheldrick, a world famous conservationist says "Elephants have the good qualities of human beings but NONE of the bad"

  • I am seeing this for the first time. These tribute videos always reduce me to tears; both sad and happy. So sad because of your loss, yet happy that you gave these wonderful animals exceptional care and love.

  • So incredibly sad! Such a magnificent animal ! These amazing beings have such wonderful souls, it is a pity they have to pass on to the next life, if only they could stay with us forever - perhaps in our hearts and memories they do!

  • I hope that Tange and Flora will continue to do well, even without sister Zula to guide them.

  • I miss her, even though I never saw her in person. I have the greatest sympathy and gratitude to the Elephant Sanctuary staff, who gave her excellent, professional, and the best care possible, and Tange, who was with Zula every bit of the way.
