A visual exploration of a couple of the Loas of Haitian Voodoo: Legba and Ghede, Haitian art, Jean Michel Basquiat, Papa Ghede, Legba, transformation arrays and possibilities.
In Haitian Vodou, the Guédé (also spelled Gede or Ghede, pronounced [ɡede] in Haitian Creole) are the family of spirits that embody the powers of death and fertility. Gede names a family of raucous spirits who personify the ancestral dead and sexual regeneration.Gede is a shameless trickster, a wise counselor, and a benevolent healer known to have special love for children.
This piece remixes Picasso's Demoiselles d'Avignon, Jean Michel Basquiat, family portraiture, high and low and also alludes to Legba, an intermediary in the Haitian pantheon, standing between the loa and humanity at the spiritual cross roads. Legba gives permission to speak with the spirits, opens and closes doorways and is associated with the prophetic.
