On Sept 7th the Essex County Board of Chosen Freeholders, in the interest of increasing revenue for the county, voted to approve a contract with ICE to house immigrant detainees in the Essex County Correctional Facility and Delaney Hall, the neighboring correctional facility run by the for-profit company Community Education Centers (CEC).
On October 9th, two years after DHS issued a report calling for widespread reform of the immigration detention system which DHS itself categorized as unfairly penal in nature, faith leaders & community members came together to march in opposition to the contract between ICE & Essex County and to call for more humane conditions and community oversight of the jail.
