My best recomendation for learning Japanese is the Michel Thomas method.

I've bought lots of his programmes and have found them to be way better than anything else out there.

It's all speaking and listening and stress free, where all the responsibiity is with the teacher, not the student.

Have a look on Amazon - they make a great Christmas present for someone who is learning Japanese!

  • How does the Michel Thomas method compare to Pimsleur?

  • Personally I think I prefer it to Pimsleur, you're able to say a lot more things with Michel Thomas. But Pimsleur is also really good and a great start.

  • New stuff wooh!! Cant wait!

Ps: You need an official Facebook account! :D

  • What would we use Facebook for??

(Honest question, I've never got round to it yet!)

  • wow, how many languages do you speak??

  • Just 3 fluently, but with all the travel I do I have to keep learning new ones all the time.

It's good for work though as I get to learn using lots of different methods and see which ones are the best (and worst of course!)

  • For anyone unsure of whether they should or shouldn't get the Michel Thomas Japanese you should definitely get the "Total Japanese" course for beginners to intermediate! I have been teaching myself as well as getting lessons since September and I only just got the Total Japanese pack the other day and it's terrific! You learn so much so fast and it gets you talking at home, which for me was a weakness as i'd find it hard to encourage myself to speak Japanese at home! A must buy!

  • Personally, I find Michel Thomas quite tedious, but most people in my French class find it really effective. If you can try it out first then do so.

I use the 'Japanese for Busy People' books/CDs to learn. They're more useful if you have someone to practice with, but by all means you could use them alone, or in conjunction with other materials.

  • I was thinking of getting the Michele Thomas Japanese for beginners 8-CD set. I never learned Japanese, but became interested after watching alot of anime in Japanese. Would you recommend anything else with this or just study this first? What about the written part of Japanese? Should I study that after learning the conversational part?

  • I agree. I'm using Advanced Mandarin with MT & have found it excellent. The information is so easy to absorb & you begin stringing together sentences as if you were a pro :)

Having used other language tools in the past, I would also recommend MT.

  • While I love the MT method, the Japanese discs do get rather irritating sometimes because of one of the students who makes so many mistakes and often the same ones over and over again, that it begins to detract from the learning experience.

If you can get past the wanting to shout at the woman for making the same mistake for the nth time, then it is a great start to learning Japanese.

I definitely recommend it but you will need some amount of patience at times!

  • I've just completed the michel thomas japanese advanced course, and now im wondering where to buy next?

  • He was a polish dude not a french dude ;)

  • Genkijapan = epic

  • Thanks for an enthusiastic review! I also think the Michel Thomas Method is great. I am learning German and began his course recently when I was about halfway through Pimsleur.

I have learned much from MT in a short time. And I am happy that I did not wait until finishing Pimsleur since MT begins with the assumption that you are an absolute beginner with no prior knowledge of the language.

I personally think that alternating between the 2 courses works great

    And, Thomas was actually polish

  • Richard you've been gone for a month,

It was the last time you got a video out for us anyway. I hope your eyes healed up just fine and that everything is still Genki!
