It is estimated that there are close to 2 million orphans in Kenya alone. Every 24 seconds, a child in Sub-Saharan Africa is orphaned as a result of HIV and Aids. South Africa, Tanzania, Malawi and Zimbabwe all have more than a million orphans. The loss of one or both parents has serious consequences for a child: it usually means the loss of access to shelter, food, clothing, health and education. many orphans find they need to contribute financially to the household, in some cases driving them to the streets to work, beg or seek food. And as we mark the day of the African child today, we visit a family in Kibera that is struggling to survive without parents.

  • The government should see this. Ref: hafidy. On your statement calling for kenyans living abroad / the u.s to help. I think the parents should give birth to a small amount of kids that they can provide for , plus government should help this people go back to ushago and teach them or introduce money generating programs in ushago. Kibera hakuna life. Kenyans leave nice rural homes to come and live in kibera

  • WOLF hates to see tears on a child. a child should be happy always.

they have enough problems when they become adults.

    will REPOST this.

  • SGK - Please, you should provide a means for us viewers to help such families. Isn't that why journalist do the job, to help? How can we help? Even if this family is given 100 US per month, they will at least be able to buy some more food and clothes. If every Kenyan abroad pitched in, there would be no such people living in such poverty in Kenya. This is sad!
