The weights you lift will vary for everyone. But just start off really conservative and build up as you get comfortable. At the beginning weight isn't as important as learning how to do the exercises properly.

Half of your work is back, not shoulders....

To lose fat you need to focus on your diet, increasing your cardio, and weight training. It takes the combination of everything together.

You should be able to shrug A LOT more then you can shoulder press. I personally do shrugs with as much as 405 pounds, but there is no way in the world I'd ever be able to shoulder press that much weight.

Thanks:)...hey, is it okay to use considerably heavier weights for dumbbell shrugs?
After a lay off for about a year I have hit the gym again...it's been a month now. for the lateral and arnold presses, the max I can lift with proper form is now 12.5 kg dumbbells (started at 5kg each)... for shrugs however, I have progressed to 20kg dumbbells. Please advise..Cheers!

@keightley2011
It's not really a back move, it's mostly a shoulder exercise.
