Funnel Cloud & Rotating Thunderstorm - Maghera, June 7th 2011

Rotating thunderstorm on convergence zone which dropped a nice funnel cloud to the east of Maghera, N. Ireland on June 7th 2011. This was viewed from the carriageway leading to Glenshane Pass. The camera is on wideangle so everything looks smaller and further away than it actually was. Funnel was spectacular to watch with rapid rotation and vortices twisting around one another inside the main funnel. The updraught base of the cell itself was also rotating like crazy prior to funnel formation, the storm produced several hours of blue c-g lightning,loud thunder, intense hail and flooding on the roads.

Nice funnel - my guess is that there would have been rotation at ground level too.

@ozthunder Thanks for your thoughts Michael on the funnel, the following day there was a damaging tornado 20-30 miles from here!, it's all happening in 2011 :)

Great that you caught this on video. I was watching it from tobermore. Pity i did not have my camera with me. The lightning was awesome.

@tylercollins1986 The funnel was at 15.00 onwards....that storm you saw was the likely the same one which produced the funnel, we where under it until after 16.00, plenty of dangerous lightning from it and bad hail, roads were floaded, quite a storm.

What time was that at? I was going through Maghera around 3/4 yesterday and seen lighting and the heavy heavy rain!!!

p.s. also missed the tornado in Eglinton tonight as well :(
