I only discovered this song after finding out that 1977's "When I Need You" (hit for Leo Sayer, written by Albert Hammond) was very similar in one place, and an out-of-court settlement had to be reached. Now I've heard the Leonard Cohen track, I think the judgement was very harsh, there's one line with a similar melody. Mind you, I've now found Leonard Cohen's back catalogue so I'm off to buy this album!

I let the love of my life go because of one act of infidelity. If only I could have forgiven her. I'm in my sixties and dream of her two or three times a week without fail. What a fool I was, and the song reminds me of how life can go on -- albeit with pain -- if one can forgive.
