The P-47 was tougher than the P-51, no question there.
When it comes to heavy cannon armament, however, both could be destroyed by a well aimed burst of any Luftwaffe fighter plane just as they could take out of commission any LW plane with their heavy machine gun armament.
In the engagement in which Lt. Robert Johnson was spared by the ruggedness of his P-47, three other Thunderbolts were shot down in quick succession by the bouncing Fw-190s.
@Eurofighter19 Armor was only a crucial advantage in a Bf-109 vs P-47 Thunderbolt duel.... and it was an immense advantage at that. There was one instance where a Bf-109 ace, already having 66 kills to his name, ran out of ammunition trying to kill an already near crippled P-47. Its actually covered in another episode of the show, lol.
That's true for late 1944 onwards, however, from December 1943 to May 1944, the period when the Luftwaffe lost control of the airspace over the Third Reich permanently, the Luftwaffe still possessed battle hardened fighter pilots transferred from the Ost Front and the 8th AF FC still had few but growing number of fighter groups equipped with long-range escort fighters capable of penetrating deep into German airspace escorting the strategic bombers.
Respond to this video... The Germans would have done better had they had more experienced pilots! Lacking a training program those newbies were sitting ducks...
@Eurofighter19 I don't know the name of the video posted here but it's the one where the fellow shot up an enemy small convoy whose troops shot him down with K-98s and then he "surrenders" to Pattons' 3rd Army not knowing who was driving the German half track...
Don't remember armor being a crucial advantage in a P-51 vs Bf-109 duel, both had the enough firepower to send the other diving to the ground engulfed in fire.

Do you have any sources for that claim?
