This clip is part (#2) of (#3) of the excellent 26-part historical series produced by BBC, "People's Century".

This footage is from the episode titled "Freedom Now", which covers the struggles for independence in India & Africa, with a particular focus on the Gold Coast/Ghana, and the rise & fall of Dr Kwame Nkrumah.


Clip (#2) starts with Dr Kwame Nkrumah becoming Prime Minister of the Gold Coast, but of a country still run by British governance. Nkrumah & his CPP manage to secure a date for independence, the 6th of March 1957.

The country in renamed Ghana upon independence, and it is a time of hope, as notables travel to Accra to witness the transition of power. Nkrumah inherits a strong economy, begins to bring large scale social reform to the country, particularly in regards to health, education, and infrastructure.
