I have just read this book over the last 3 days and was captivated by the wonderful literary style of Simon Winchester. Having visited China in March 2009, this book was as evocative as it was brilliantly written. A brilliant expose about a brilliant man.

I just attended yesterday Sep 22/08)in Hong Kong Mr. Winchester's lecture organized by THE ROYAL GEOGRAPHICAL SOCIETY Of Hong Kong. I was mesmerized by this story and how little Western people know of Joseph Needham. I bought the book right there and had it autographed by Simon. Thank you for this eye-opener!
