Japan Answers 7: Do Japanese people eat dogs and cats?

I happened to to have the chance to talk to a Japanese butcher on camera so that I could settle the question once for all: Do Japanese people eat dogs and cats.

Is dog meat or cat meat sold in Japan?
No, it's not sold in Japan. We can't sell it in Japan.
By law you can't sell it?
In America you have the USDA and it's banned, right?
It's the same in Japan. By law we can not sell dog and cat meat.
But horse meat is okay, right?
Yes, horse meat is sold in Japan.
Horse meat is sold in Kyoto and Kumamoto. You can buy horse meat, wild boar and deer meat. You can buy dog meat in Korea. We can't sell it in Japan.
How about a long time ago?
I don't know. They say that during the war people ate dog meat back then.
Yeah, I've heard of stories about that before.
Me too, but I've never seen people eating dog meat here in Japan.

great video , thanks for sharing! I get real frustrated when ppl stereo type all Asians as dog and cats eaters when Japanee never eat them. Like what the old man said, maybe some ate during war when there were no food to eat. but now, dogs and cats are considered to be man's best friend here. Wow! I never knew that anyone would actually be concerned about something like that. Who in their right minds would think that dog or cat meat would be sold in Japan? Whale maybe, but beloved pets? Nope.

@lotr4000 Surprisingly, I have never seen whale meat sold here. But I've been told my neighbors that it sometimes pops up in local neighborhood food markets.

the butcher seems like a nice and he's so friendly. i guess that only happens in some area of asia(like china and korea as the butcher said). i am so disappointed about China ppl still eat dog and cat meat nowadays and this already formed a kind of business line out there. anyway i was raised up in canton china and i saw all kinds of these things. especially cantonese ppl they take whatever creature out there as food. btw i took snake before, that's really nice as food, but not the cats and dogs

@NickDan555 exactly the same happened in Greece during the German occupation years.it does not mean that we eat dogs and cats.even in those hursh times,many people

died from famine without having eaten any dog or cat.

I dont think there is such law banning the sales of dog meat. Maybe the butcher didnt know, since dog meat is so rare in Japan and is only found in Korea towns, and the dog meat dish is called Boshintang, so Japanese people dont recognize it as a dog meat dish.

Please note that I am not blaming Korean. I think the whole dog meat debate is ridiculous.

@lordvelos Yes but it has popped up in Mexico but it is REALLY bad there right now I mean people are killed in the streets all day everyday nobody get in nobody get out the sad part is you cannot get out I mean kids mom dads still have to go on in the world not knowing if the other will come home and I recently cared for a horse who came from there from slaughter in Mississippi so I never knew it was still around anywhere he was a banged up horse he had a "gang sign" CUT into him cruel justcruel

However I still do not like a "shelter" that is still up and running in Japan it is a KILL shelter which means there is NO adoption it is for "unwanted pets" but every pet has a person and another that would love it and you know I would be okay if they euthanized them properly but they GAS them a slow death can you imagine dieing trying to get air but the only thing there is is gas that is thick and killing you I mean why I disagree with the shelter not the people kinda like American Pit Bulls.

Everyone knows Japanese doesn't eat This kind of shit! Chinese do eat that and even more discusting stuff. Many south east Asian countries eat the same from insects to snakes. Koreans do it Dogs but actually I rarely ever seen a Dog restaurent in there, and not everyone eat it though.
