Natural gas extraction through the process called "Hydraulic fracturing" or "Fracking" has been grabbing headlines lately, but did you know that fracking had been tested in the 1960's and 1970's using nuclear weapons? The first test was code named Gasbuggy, which was detonated on December 10, 1967 as part of the Plowshare program. The test area is now part of the Carson National Forest in New Mexico. Learn about the environmental impacts from such a test.
This sequence is from the program "Atomic Journeys - Welcome to Ground Zero" by filmmaker Peter Kuran and narrated by William Shatner.
