I guess it derives from sex aka reproduction (a means to survive).....
Good things feel good like sex that is how we can distinguish what feels good,
hammer a nail through your thumb and that feels bad that is how we distinguish what is bad.
Basically speaking of course but just those simple traits that have evolved over time explains a lot.

Why do I want to live (being an atheist) what makes me want to keep on living......
The answer is quite simply the "unknown" and/or not knowing.
Like, when I walk down the stairs will I be confronted by deity? a unicorn? will I be reunited with an old friend? will I hear some bad news? will I find out that I won the lottery? the possibilities are endless and I want to fill my life with as many possibilities as I can because they are exciting and sometimes heartbreaking but feeling is good.

Well, I was an atheist until an engine broke in the airliner. I felt really inferior with all the other passengers praying and hoping. I came up with this solution: I created my own God who was 2 inches taller than theirs, and was also shaved (theirs had a white beard like Santa-Claus). Well, that was it - as soon as I prayed the plane was automatically put into landing and none was hurt. Have it in mind, can occasionally prove useful.

Sorry about the way that sounded - I meant that statement to sound like the title of the book series (...for Dummies).
