Speaking of hunger in Africa does not just mean recognizing the hunger and malnutrition problems; it also means talking about their dependency on foreign food aid. The majority of us live off of rice, which is mostly imported from Asia. This is something worth pointing out: since the soil in our country is so fertile, we could normally live off the fruits of our own land.Confronted with these challenges, Bishop Raphaël Guilavogui wished to convey the Church communities genuine and realistic commitment an assurance that fits very well with the Churchs view of development in Africa. For Cardinal Martino, though missionary and NGO work is important, true growth has to come from within. It is Africa herself that must be the leading actor in her own fate, in her own future: we should help the African people, but the responsibility lies in her own hands.Despite the difficulties in Africa, the president of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace expressed his intention of not leaving Africa to defend itself alone. In a globalized world where immigration cannot be avoided, Cardinal Martino recalled the importance of solidarity among the nations: Africa is not an isolated case, Africa is part of the world, and as such, the entire world community should help because African health is world health.
