This video segment is part of a Carer Awareness Training DVD produced by staff and carers at Sunderland Carers' Centre. The aim of the DVD is to provide carer awareness training in an accessible way and in bite-sized segments. This training is aimed at professionals working with carers who may find it difficult to get to more traditional and formal training sessions about this subject. It is hoped health and social care professionals will find this training useful, although anyone with an interest in carers will be interested in the information presented.
The DVD covers many themes around unpaid carers looking after family members, partners, friends or neighbours who have a long term illness, disability or are elderly and frail. The carers featured, from Sunderland, Gateshead and South Tyneside, talk about their real-life experiences of caring. The DVD covers various themes:
Support from Social Care services, support from GP and Primary Care services, support from Community Care / Hospital services, personalised services, identifying carers, information for carers, young carers, what carers do, the impact of caring on carers, a life outside caring, carers and their health, caring and finances, carers and employment and organisations supporting carers. Denise Robertson, MBE, also gives an introduction to the DVD.
The DVD includes contact information for North East organisations supporting carers. For more information about this training DVD contact Sunderland Carers' Centre on 0191 5673232 or go to www.sunderlandcarers.co.uk
