  • Bravo! Reminds me of a bit Emerson, Lake and Palmer (without Palmer). Something tells me you were a fan.

  • @terrybeaton No, not especially.

  • til measure 12 is a chorale, isn't it?

  • @erroll9621 Right (and the chorale tune comes back later).

  • @smalin at measure 87, right?

  • @erroll9621 Actually, the tune comes back earlier, at the end of measure 50.

  • I thought you were an atheist. Since I am not acknowledged of this piece's end(s), I can't really tell...

  • Well that was certainly interesting o.o

  • @gsarci2011 The original carol is anonymous. None of the original carol appears in this piece, however (all the music here was composed by me).

  • Reminds me of computer music from 3:43 till the end of the canon. Nice piece anyway, sir, but who composed the carol?

  • Marvel not Joseph does not imply Joseph not Marvel

  • sounds like auto tune?? cuz of the breathing and such

  • I like the progression around 1:14 at chastity.

  • Around 2:14, when the voices say "I, Joseph". It sounds a bit like the Beach Boys.

  • I can imagine the distant future where mankind has been wiped out and pieous robots sing this on a mountain top. The part 0:52-> sounds like Yes (the progressive rock band) Great!

  • That's what I've been told.

  • You have Polish ancestors, right?

  • Hello Big Fan, sorry, I've not done K 517 yet; everything that's available is either on YouTube or on my DVD (which you can buy on my web site), or both.

  • Hi Stephen from one of your biggest fans (and biggest fans of MAM). Just stumbled on this piece--fantastic preparation for Christmas :) Will have to listen to it again. On a separate note, I wanted to ask if you have a MAM version of Sonata in D minor, K. 517 by Scarlatti (e.g. see Youtube -- Harpsichord Performance: Comparone Plays Scarlatti)? That's a diabolical but enthralling piece!

  • this deserves a real life performance :)

  • I would've gone mad if I was Joseph. His only conclusion would logically be that Mary cheated on him.

  • That's the organ saying "Marvel not, Joseph!" (which is then echoed by the choir).

  • BTW, 3cplantin, I updated the FAQ for this video.

  • The first version of my MAM software was completed in 1985, and the last of my compositions (but for a couple) was completed in 1982, so there was essentially no overlap.

I once tried to write a piece as a "demo composition" for the MAM, but it was turning out so badly (as music) that I stopped after a page or two.

The way I think about music has always had a visual feeling to it, so most of my pieces (except those where I consciously focused on some other aspect) look pretty good in the MAM.

  • Beautiful. And I really like the accent of the choir. There are some places that remind me harmonically of the Saint Saens Organ Concerto (1:16-1:20 and parallels) that is quoted in the little pig film, "Babe." When you write, do you keep the potential visual out of your mind, or does it sometimes play a role? If so, how do you compose differently when thinking of a graphical display? Thanks.
