It's a type 141 DMU, or Diesel Multiple Unit. They are used on short distance inter-urban commuter routes.
Decendants of these the 142, 150, 155, and 158 are still in service, but as for the 141, most of them were exported to Iran after their service lives in the UK.
They sound great, but are very un-comfortable to ride on, as they sit on plain axles, and not bogeys like other trains.
