For me this is one of the most beautiful arias of all times, and Emma Kirkby´s voice is always a pleasure. A few days ago I was so lucky as to hear Philippe Jaroussky sing this aria, and it was a technical perfect, indescribably beautiful and touching performance. What marvellous singers we have these days!
These verses by Metastasio were also used for Sesto in La Clemenza di Tito by Gluck, and sung unsurpassingly by Cecilia Bartoli in her Gluck album. Simply the most sublimely beautiful performance. The composer also used the melody in 'Iphigénie en Tauride', as millions could hear it from the Metropolitan Opera yesterday.
