CHINA DOLL - SONGS OF THE MEMORIES Cai Xin-juan Sound Sound Record (SMC 85004)： To interpret the "golden oldies" of the 30s is no easy job for an 18-year-old girl like Cai Xin-juan, but the Taiwanese songstress has made a bold attempt in this album. Cai is gradually making herself known to local fans since China Doll was released some months ago. Her style is very different to Cai Qin, Qi Yu or Julie Sue, who have quite a following in Hongkong. As the album title suggests, the 12 tracks featured here are old compositions which had been hits from the 30s to the late 60s. Young listeners will probably find them unfamiliar but those who go for nice melodies will certainly find these "classic" Chinese pops appealing. We may have to wait for another 30 years to see what popular tunes today will become the "classics" of tomorrow. Cai's Songs of the Memories provides some good lessons. New arrangements have added a more modern touch to these old tunes. Cai retains her own style and no shadow of the original singers is, therefore, found. Although the sentiments she projects in old-time favourites are a bit plain, she has done a satisfactory job in interpreting them. The collection includes Zi Wei's Song of the Memories, Wu En-yin's Reflections of Love, Li Xian-lan's Three Years, Zhang Yi-wen's My Love Faraway, Yao Li's Eight Dolls, Gu Mei's The Sea of Bitterness. Xie Lei's Miss You, Miss You, I Miss You, once a hit in the late 60's, is the most recent number compared to the others. Incidentally, this is the only song in this album that is originally sung by a male singer. One interesting aspect in these oldies is that the lyrics have a literary-touch---something of a rarity nowadays.

要演釋30年代的“經典金曲” 對一個像蔡幸娟的一個18歲女孩子來說是件不容易的事，但這位台­­灣女歌手在這張專輯中做出了大膽的嘗試。自從蔡幸娟的《中國娃­娃­》專輯出版後幾個月，她逐漸使自己受到本地歌迷所注意。她的­風格­與蔡琴、齊豫或蘇芮這些在香港擁有相當知名度的歌手非常不­同。正­如這張專輯的名稱，當中12首曲目是30年代到60年代­末的流行­歌曲。年輕的聽眾可能並不熟悉這些歌曲，但對喜歡美妙­旋律的人一­定會發覺這些“經典中文歌曲”很吸引。我們可能要再­多等30年才­會見到今天的流行歌曲將來成為“經典”。

蔡幸娟的《回想曲》提供了一些很好的例子。新的編排為這些老曲調­增加了現代的感覺。蔡幸娟保留了她自己的風格，因此也沒有發現原­唱的影子。雖然她在演繹這些舊日的流行曲時在情感投射上有點平淡­，但她已做得令人滿意。輯錄了包括紫薇的《回想曲》，吳鶯音的《­斷腸紅》，李香蘭的《三年》，張伊雯的《遙遠寄相思》，姚莉的《­八個娃娃》，顧媚的《恨海》，和謝雷的《想你想你我想你》一首在­60年代末流行的亦是與其餘歌曲比較上近期的歌曲。順便一提，這­首歌是在這張專輯裡唯一一首是由男歌手原唱的歌曲。一個有趣的地­方是，在這些老歌的歌詞中我們可得到一個對文學的接觸 ---如今已是一種罕見的東西了。

娟姐十幾歲時唱這歌已經可以跟眾前輩並駕齊驅。

二十幾歲以後曲藝更上一層樓，但是舉手投足用的是日本風味。

到了台灣望春風時代，才又回歸到中國美女的風姿。
