Gosh, I just love this song!!! We're singing it in chorus too :)

Beautiful song; I tear up, but what does the song MEAN?

I never had any children, partly because no daughter could live up to the Peggy Ann Garner character, and no son could live up to an Opie Taylor (aka Ron Howard) standard. And I could never live up to the Ward Cleaver standard !!! So I have a pet guinea pig.

@JackieBill123 Yeah,ut I think it could take its place alongside Wonderful Life, but I have to agree that this one is much grittier and "real". Wish it would get shown on TV more, I am so old that I remember it being in the Cinemas.

No the whole story is about an alcoholic father and the effect he has on his family

He interrupted her because the whole story is about the competition between the parents for the daughter's affection. Outstanding movie. Dorothy MacGuire a little too elegant looking for the role, but James Dunn nailed it ... won an Oscar and deserved it. Joan Blondell surprisingly effective, for someone used to playing ditzy blondes. I wish all the fans of It's A Wonderful Life would instead see this as the "Christmas" movie. It's A Wonderful Life is too syrupy for me.

the greatest novel and the greatest movie in history!
Annie Laurie is an old Scottish song based on poem by William Douglas (1672?-1748) of Dumfries and Galloway. The words were modified and the tune was added by Alicia Scott in 1834/5. The song is also known as Maxwelton Braes.
IT is the man recalling when ANNIE ACCEPTED HIS PROPOSAL for marriage
Anna was the youngest daughter of Robert Laurie, who became first baronet of Maxwellton in 1685

Maxwelton's braes are bonnie
Where early fa's the dew
And 'twas there that Annie Laurie
Gave me her promise true.
Gave me her promise true
Which ne'er forgot will be
And for bonnie Annie Laurie
I'd lay me doon and dee.
