I have a Gusle.
I got some strings (8 strings/horsetails) from a friend, and I've tried to play but it just becomes some awful sounds. Anyone who knows why? Do I need more strings (I've read that 30 is the traditional amount) and what tone should it be tuned?

The current price range for a gusle instrument is between 200 € and 500 €.
The instrument is so mysterious, so ancient, that nobody really knows how old it is and where it came from. However, the word "gusle" is a Slavic word meaning "string".
Gusle music is performed by a minstrel who tells a story by singing/reciting decasyllabic verses. Traditionally, this music is related to oral, epic poetry, therefore many ethnologists see the influences of ancient Greek tradition (Homer).
