When Johnny Comes Marching Home

"When Johnny Comes Marching Home" (sometimes "When Johnny Comes Marching Home Again") is a popular song of the American Civil War that expressed people's longing for the return of their friends and relatives who were fighting in the war.
Movie Scene:
Cold Mountain (USA 2003).
Battle of the Crater, Part of the Siege of Petersburg/Virginia in 1864.

Lyrics:
When Johnny comes marching home again,
Hurrah! Hurrah!
We'll give him a hearty welcome then,
Hurrah! Hurrah!
Oh, the men will cheer the boys will shout
The ladies they will all turn out,
And we'll all feel gay
When Johnny comes marching home.
And we'll all feel gay
When Johnny comes marching home.

Get ready for the Jubilee,
Hurrah! Hurrah!
We'll give the hero three times three,
Hurrah! Hurrah!
Well, the laurel wreath is ready now
To place upon his loyal brow,
And we'll all feel gay
When Johnny comes marching home.
And we'll all feel gay
When Johnny comes marching home.

In eighteen hundred and sixty-one
Hurrah! Hurrah!
That was when the war begun,
Hurrah! Hurrah!
In eighteen hundred and sixty-two,
Both sides were falling to,
And we'll all drink stone wine,
When Johnny comes marching home.
And we'll all drink stone wine,
When Johnny comes marching home.

In eighteen hundred and sixty-three,
Hurrah! Hurrah!
Old Abe, he ended slavery
Hurrah! Hurrah!
In eighteen hundred and sixty-three
Old Abe, he ended slavery
And we'll all drink stone wine,
When Johnny comes marching home.
And we'll all drink stone wine,
When Johnny comes marching home.

In eighteen hundred and sixty-four,
Hurrah! Hurrah!
Abe called for five hundred thousand more,
Hurrah! Hurrah!
In eighteen hundred and sixty-five,
They talked rebellion--strife;
And we'll all drink stone wine
When Johnny comes marching home.
And we'll all drink stone wine
When Johnny comes marching home.

  • @minecraftproject12 Yes but gay before the 70's ment happyness. Now it means something entirely different

  • @RundownJet I hope one day it will mean happy again, I am tired of slang and improper language shaping our society.

  • This is amazing song !!! Lovely :) !

  • abe ftw

  • @JEL1219L got it. Battle of the Crater is part of the Siege of Petersburg and it is a very horrible trench warfare. ones that i think the history of the battle itself had been published to every US. Army officers in the WW1 when they went to fight in France.

The 'Blow the Huge Hole' is actually to 'mine' the rebels fortifications (and the actual mine was dug and the bomb was detonated.

Burnside shouldn't let Lelid do the assault. ten minutes and the shaken rebs got their hearths back.

  • Why are people fighting? Lol just enjoy the video.

  • @DiscothecaImperialis

Battle of the Crater. Union plan was to blow a huge hole in Rebel defences and then rush in. But at the last moment there was a commander change for the Union, one that didn't fully understand the plan which was to go AROUND the crater. Instead he rushed all his men into the crater and ended up trapping his men. That's just a quick summary though, just google it.

  • 1. So did the souths also disagree with slavery? if they win (which means the new country was found) the legitimated CSA will also ban slave trade?

    2. What is the name of this battle? this looks like a siege. and did the soldier really use his bayonet-rifle as an impromptu javelin?

  • @greerkp01 well i said that Because Ron Pual has said that the Constitution does not give him the right to police the world. So by him looking at it like that i turned the tables around and said where in the Constitution does it give the President the right to buy ppl

(I THINK) Ron Pual will give our enemies any thing just to keep peace by seting the example first... NOT GOOD AT ALL...

  • @798unionpipeliner The Civil War was originally a fight over states rights and the role of government. The main isue was who would have the right to decide if a new teritory becoming a state would be a free or slave state. Obviously there is no direct mention of that in the Constitution, however as the leader he would have been able encourage both the Congress & Senate to allot him the necessary funds. That is how all Presidents are able to acomplish things while in office. For Example ObamaCare
