Woodworking has been abandoned in all but the best independent schools in the country, but is alive and well at the Clear Spring School. Sloyd was a system of woodworking education which was believed to have benefit for the development of intelligence and character for all students, even those planning to go to college. It can start as early as first grade. This project is based on one from Gustaf Larsson's 1906 book Elementary Sloyd and Whittling and illustrated with the 4th grade students from the Clear Spring School.

  • The project can be done to different dimensions that you might choose. Our design requires 3 pieces 5/8 in. square x 5 1/4 in. long and one piece 5/8 in. square x 3 3/4 in. The top pieces are 3/8 in. thick by 3/4 in. wide x 5 1/4 in. long.

  • Kids all over the world need to be working with their hands. Your grandchildren are very lucky to have you to introduce them to the joy of woodworking.

  • thanks for doing this video. My son's montessori class would like to do this project. Would you give me the sizes for the wood to be cut. Looks like 7 of one, 2 of another and another 2 of another. Thank you

  • You are doing some very inspiring stuff there at Clear Springs School. I love the video and have been looking for material to help me teach my 4 year old grandson about my hobby of woodworking safely. This has introduced me to the Sloyd method and I will definitely be using it with all of my grandchildren. I found and downloaded your plans for the bench hook, but needed the video to understand the construction better. I plan on making 3 or 4. Keep up the good work.
