The overall purpose of "Food:Riot" is to bring forward the discussion of our outlook on food, from the class divisions conjured up simply by the type of food to the celebrity personalities that pervade our TV screens shepherding us through the dark paths of obesity and brutality to that of healthy happy lifestyles all for the love of humanity.

Almost on queue the world has hit a problem in that over three continents are now rioting over the fact they can't afford food. Egyptians have to queue over 7 hours in the hope of getting subsidised bread. Haiti's government has been overthrown. Somalia two people had died from the riots that took place in late April.

After trying out several foods, I found that it was hard not to have a built in association with which type of person, class etc that this food evoked. This referenced the ideas of levi strauss and "The raw and the cooked". These Experiments in filming with 3 separate stereo channels and on DV
also brought forward that the only really interesting looking and sounding
food was the popcorn. There was a chaos and rhythm that was suitable to attach
a meaning to.

This gave me the opportunity to do what I personally believe art is good for, interjecting to what is going in around it. Using the ideas of collage, or intellectual montage including the ideas of Walter Benjamin and "The work of art and the age of technical reproduction", the simple element of 1 image is so known, it is invisible, add a second image to create a third meaning. In this case the first image was popcorn, the second is the sampled sounds of riots, the third meaning refers to the chaos that is going on when you push a people to the point that they can't afford basic foods for there
family.
