You condemned the whole laptop (software & hardware) because of one application you did not like...?

A good choice, sir! =D

There are many different linux distributions (or types, as you may want to call them). Some have been taylor made for the EEE PC (like EEEbuntu). Any of these distributions can be downloaded from their respective websites (but are often large downloads - 600-850 MB).
I personally recommend EEEbuntu Standard, but the choice is entirely yours.
Once you've made your choice, I can confidently say that there'll be an installation guide somewhere on the internet.

Good luck! =D

Definitely. If you're planning to take it around the world with you, merely so you can lets say, upload pictures, or want to use it for education, etc, it's superb. It's robustness and ability to be modified makes it worth so much more than you're paying!
