Released in 2004 on Stones Throw.

Madvillain is a collab between MF DOOM and Madlib. Both fellows are very prolific and talented hip hop artists. This is Madvillains debut album.

Madvillainy is probably one of my top favorite albums of all time. It's comical, dark, bizarre, lighthearted, cold blooded, silly and brilliant all at once. Madlib's beats, as usually is the case, are exceptional. He samples non stop one here, sampling dusty Sun Ra jazz, Street Fighter 2, prog rocks Gentle Giant, everything. His beats on Madvillainy are relentlessly creative and unique sounding. There are also plenty of spoken word samples from what seems like vintage drug awareness commercials and tons of B movies.

DOOM's flow is as grizzled as it ever was, but more cerebral than ever. Anyone who's listened to DOOM before will recognize his hoarse, lazy-ish flow. But his lyrics, holy shit, are otherworldly. They read like the ramblings of brilliantly diseased mind. He's self deprecating then self aggrandizing, rapping about crimes, comic books, weed, booze, hoes, all kinds of random things ... pretty much everything under the sun. DOOM rules !

I'm betting 99% of underground hip hop fans already know about this record. It's excellent, but it definitely takes some getting used to. It's a very different beast than any other hip hop album out there. Madvillain is in a league all of their own. DOOM and Madlib have a very special chemistry together. They compliment one another perfectly.

If you are looking for THEE ultimate modern day underground album that will flip your lid, this album comes to you HIGHLY recommended. If given time, it will grow on anyone.

  • was this album so raw that it put you at a loss for words for five days?

  • Hahaha, nah. I grew a cold sore and didn't want to immortalise it in a video.

  • Now we are talking! when I smoke weed and listen to DOOM I am in his world

  • I love getting blunted to DOOM.

  • Hey, what would be a really good old school sounding hip hop group? One where it sounds like a bunch of dudes sitting in some old ghetto backyard with a fat snare drum and lots of turntable-ism... any recommendations?

  • Ever try out Pharcyde ?

  • I love the album too. But I miss Binary Star more.

  • @thejavon7466 Doom's a dope rapper but I personally feel like there are lot of rappers that can compete with him and are better than him

  • Great review man, I watched your Vaudeville Villain review and enjoyed that as well. Good work, and I appreciate the more analytical and cerebral approach that you take to the albums. You earned my subscription.

  • I subscribed because I fucking loved this guys word choice!

  • Doom is an artist that's hard to like at first. Like I didn't like him at first but I gave him time. There are people who thinks he the best rapper alive... I don't agree with that but he's still pretty good

  • You know it's underground when some white dude does the album review.
