1) Alpha Lipoic Acid 300mg every six hours and benfotiamine 150mg daily to prevent the formation of AGE during elevated sugars. 2) Management of blood pressure with ACE inhibitor or ARB which prevent fibrotic changes 3) weigh all foods to match your insulin and food as exactly as possible to avoid blood sugar spikes. Avoid juices, simple carbs, rapid carbs and number 9 4) Novolog for rapid suppression of glucose, Hypurin for the C-peptide. (1-2 punch)

You are SO right in that we still fall short. Diabetes is such an all encompassing condition, and even with all of the tools we have and knowledge we have, it's still very hard to do.
