  • This is one of the only tunes I posted years ago that I still listen to regularly. I dont even bother with anything else I used to put up.

    such a good song,

  • What is up with your name? I mean it's Squeeze my lemon babe....

  • @BeautifulLittleIere

    hehe,

    ever heard of Robert Johnson?

look up Robert Johnson's 'Traveling Riverside Blues'

if you listen carefully you should hear it.

'till the juice runs down my leg'

  • That's some unreal picking....

Where the heck is that picture? It sure aint Wautauga or Wilkes county... Looks like Florida...

    Deep Gap. Check it out....

"When I was a little boy I wanted a barlow knife, now I want little Shady Grove to say she'll be my wife"

I had the Barlow... now I crave Shady Grove....

  • @swinggeist I just looked up on google pictures of shaded tree areas haha..

now that I think about it, I shoulda used a picture from the Blue Ridge Parkway right up here where I live in NC.

  • Doc Watson is an American treasure!!

  • I assume people are saying that 'Shady Grove' isn't Bluegrass because it's old enough to be considered an old-timey folk song, instead. And I would agree - if he were playing it in an old-timey manner. But this is clearly Bluegrass.

  • @mrgabest If the banjo was being frailed he wouldn't be doing any drop thumbing. And your going to have to explain the jazz part to me lol

  • @longbowbanjoAL That's a true, the banjo is being frailed. The arrangement has elements of jazz, however, so as a whole I'd have to say it's bluegrass. There's no strict delineation, of course, so it's all just a matter of perspective.

  • The clawhammer banjo on this recording is none other than banjo god Don Stover --banjo player for the Lilly Brothers. To hear more of this monumental musician, check out Don's recording "Things In Life" available as a download on Amazon. A true genius on clawhammer and Scruggs style. An added bonus on that recording is a young David Grisman.

  • @mrgabest But the banjo in this song is being played clawhammer style.Which is the old timey way of playing the banjo instead of using finger picks. The tune and the words are the same in this version as it has always been.

  • This version is damn hard to learn on guitar!!! It's fun to learn, though, because I remember being three and listening to this on the car stereo whilst riding to my mom's house.

  • This is one of the first songs I learned to play on the fiddle and is still one of my favorites. It made me sound like I could play, befor I could.

  • @gamerboy259 Doc was famous as a "flat picker" as JohnnsCoolStuff says above...I saw him and Merle play this at Castle Creek in Austin in 1969....

  • nothing could replace the sound of a banjo

  • I'm learning to play this song on my guitar!
