"The Masque of the Red Death", originally published as "The Mask of the Red Death"(1842) is a short story by Edgar Allan Poe. The story follows Prince Prospero's attempts to avoid a dangerous plague known as the Red Death by hiding in his abbey. He, along with many other wealthy nobles, has a masquerade ball within seven rooms of his abbey, each decorated with a different color. In the midst of their revelry, a mysterious figure enters and makes his way through each of the rooms. When Prospero confronts this stranger, he falls dead. The story follows many traditions of Gothic fiction and is often analyzed as an allegory about the inevitability of death, though some critics advise against an allegorical reading. Many different interpretations have been presented, as well as attempts to identify the true nature of the disease of the "Red Death."

The story was first published in May 1842 in Graham's Magazine. It has since been adapted in many different forms. The story was adapted in 1964 by Roger Corman into a film, The Masque of the Red Death, starring Vincent Price. The film adapted parts of another Poe story, "Hop-Frog", involving the court jester and his wife It has also been alluded to throughout other works in many types of media. The song "Bringer of Death" is from Danzig 4p, the fourth studio album by Danzig. It was released in 1994 on American Recordings following 1993's highly successful Thrall: Demonsweatlive EP and singer Glenn Danzig's 1992 instrumental solo effort, Black Aria. Though it is properly titled Danzig 4P, most fans, and the band members themselves, usually refer to it simply as Danzig 4. .

  • ...and darkness and decay and the red death held illuminate over them all.

  • Thanks berylman! I love that quote from Poe's story!

  • Awesome! This is actually my favourite Vincent Price movie.

  • Thanks hawkeyevsgirl! "The Abominable Dr. Phibes" is mine. If I ever find the right song, maybe I'll make a music video to that movie too.

  • Two P's in a Pod: Poe and Price. Any other combination would be, well...Priceless. I read this story years ago, even saw the silent film version, but this one is tops. I agree that Danzig is a fine match for these scenes.

  • Thanks ThymeBottle! Is the silent version closer to Poe's story than the Vincent Price version?

  • Prospero bears relevance to today with the bent knees of our elect powerless to run with whats left of their souls when they owe them as payment.Everything has a price.Everything.Especially today.Among those to whom money is nothing: souls are the only real currency.

  • Thank you! The movie isn't a perfect cinematic interpretation of Poe's story, but there is enough of his influence to make it one of my all time favorite horror movies. Please watch it if you have an oppurtunity!

  • Thank you! The dark poetry of this movie is what modern horror is lacking! I thought Danzig's song was the perfect match for it.

  • A good friend gave me the dvd as a gift. Thank you!
