Although it initially looks like nothing is happening, this Meccanograph, or drawing machine, produces a single very long self interwoven line that eventually results in a pleasing pattern. In many ways, this is a simple guilloche machine.

The pattern can be varied by changing one of three sets of gear ratios which changes the number of 'points' to one of 2, 3, 4, 5 or 7; changes the density of strokes per cycle and changes the frequency of the bumps. Additionally, the crank on the left alters the length of stroke and the cam on the right changes the shape of each stroke. In all a myriad of patterns are possible.
