Part 2 of 7: This week on Science and the Outer Streams, Peter Shor explains the philosophy of spiritual teacher George Ivanovitch Gurdjieff. Gurdjieff is arguably "the most colorful, enigmatic, and charismatic man of the 20th Century." Gurdjieff's basic teaching is that human life is lived in waking sleep, and transcendence of this state requires a specific inner work. This leads to otherwise inaccessible levels of vitality and awareness. Mr. Shor has been working with Gurdjieff's teachings since 1976. He is the president of the Claymont Society, an organization that directs Claymont Court, a community and school founded by J.G. Bennett, a principal student Gurdjieff's . Andy Nesky, President of the Pittsburgh Chapter of the Theosophical Society, is the host.

  • To approach Gurdjieff one must do so with a broad spectrum of learning. Much of Gurdjieff only becomes apparent when viewed with an eye of diverse comprehension. What that at first is confusing and strange sounding of Gurdjieff's teachings, in time become clear and understandable - given that the would-be knower has made an actual effort to aquire the ability to know, to actually comprehend.

Gurdjieff requires effort on many planes in order to tap into his vast wealth of wisdom.

  • so...do you recommend a source...to learn? a school perhaps?

  • I'm interested in what these guys have to say about Gurjieff. But to my ears it's all a load of "interlectual waffel". They are rambeling on...as interlectuals do. I get a vivid impression that they understand none of it. Just empty talk. IMO.

  • @ghahandi Gurdjieff schools do exist..I have encountered two of them in the UK (have heard of others) personaly. I did not join, for various reasons. Gurdjieff warned about imitation groups, which would come about after he died. I'm not happy with Gurdjieffs warning as he is now dead. How are we to follow his 'Way'.? but I do advise caution, as the two groups I encountered practiced "G's" techniques with very undesirable results.IMO.

  • Practiced Gurdjieffs techniques of (self remembering) & (self observation) with a will which Gurdjiff said:- Must be "super human". If you do not apply this kind of effort, you will achieve nothing. Most of Gurdjieffs students got nothing at all from his techniques. Even Ouspensky achieved only a little higher conciousness experience. If you want real results you must apply incredible efforts. Then you will need guidance from a real group.? It can be done, but try the other ways first. Good luck

  • there are schools....the qustion is: are you REALLY interested? are you really searching?

  • @Doderhultarn89 Needleman tries~

  • @galleybox One of main obstacles I perceive has to do with Ouspenkys, " In Search of the Miraculous" (Fragments of an Unknown Teaching"). Many people are introduced to Gurdjieff via this book. Many desire the same experiences or level of wakefulness as chronicled by Ouspensky. I believe the G Foundation may be a school where one may need like a crutch after a period of time. G is gone. His teachings remain in 30 flavors~So, I agree.

  • @ghahandi there are schools,as with any "organised schools" there is a warning!

as bruce lee said "take what is usefull and move on". G had a very good influence on my life, but be carefull not to get bogged down! important thing is to stay awake,be aware.

  • 3 brains X 3 applications

    knowbots vs creators vs critics

    dramatists vs empaths vs realists

    doers vs enjoyers vs meditators

Each of the nine is a consciousness,

People habitually align to one in each row.

Awakening from trance requires the discepline to partake the spectrum of each row.

The Goal is to balance with the circumstances appropriately instead of comfortably.

Meaning of Life in a nutshell ! (or was that 43?)

  • @Oramireally

    You mean self observation?

  • I think it's' always interesting to watch people try and define consciousness.

    fun isn't it?
