First of all, you will need a SD or micro SD (preferably SD) card.
(2gb or less, but bigger than 512mb) SDHC Cards will work. A 512mb will work, but a backup file can not be created in such a small memory size.
Sd card compatibility is provided in this website. I definitely prefer Sandisk Brand 2gb SD cards. 32mb SD cards will work, but just go get that Sandisk Brand 2gb SD card.

Okay, the only reason I am considering softmoding my Wii is to play games bought from other regions (I have an Black 2011 European Wii and I want to import Japanese games). But if newer Wii can't load games from DVDs, are they able to became region-free?

not sure if this will help any one but my wii froze on the press 1 screen and i pressed the power button,reset,power, reset then waited about 30 sec and it came up hope this helps
