Ave Maria(Schubert) played by Isao Suzuki(Japan) using his own custom-made upright bass.
Isao's double bass was built by a craftsman thirty-five years ago with his own design based on a form of a viola da gamba used primarily in the Renaissance and Baroque periods. It is the only one in the world. Sometimes he uses it with strings for a cello to play in octave. At the time of this recording he puts electric bass strings on it to utilize the bass more fully. This technique allows him to play backing and melody simultaneously, which creates a completely original, resonant and colorful sound.

  • I also play contrabass - but nothing as good as this. Isao's technique brings out sounds that seem inpossible, & the emotional expresses thrills my soul while bringing tears to my eyes.
