a little smoke should be fine, burning junk leaves carbon deposits but you're supposed to replace the alarms every 10 yrs so who cares. an open flame burns plastic, that's why they say not to light a match

I do not think that testing with smoke hurts it, but you should not test a detector with an open flame. That's at least what I read in an instruction manual (not to use a flame).

That is neat. is it just me or did most older smoke detectors have to be tested by holding a lit cigerette or a match up to it. Now they all have test buttons. I once heard that testing a smoke detector with real smoke actually harms it. I don't know how that can be though.
