Is it the vacuum pump, I wonder? GW locos have one driven off the crosshead. I was just watching another video of King Haakon at the NVR, and it did exactly the same. So maybe it's a feature common to Norway and Swindon.

I remember when I was at Uni in the 80s that we had steam heating in the halls of residence and that would knock hammer and bang and growl until the whole building was shaking when it warmed up in the morning, used to drive us poor students out of bed.
