On August 6, 2012, Chairman John Mica (FL-07) spoke with WUSA to discuss outrageous Amtrak food and ticket subsidies.
Amtrak losses in food and beverage service have amounted to a staggering $833 million over the last ten years. It costs passengers $9.50 to buy a cheeseburger on Amtrak, but the cost to Amtrak is $16.15 each. Riders pay $2.00 for a Pepsi, but it costs Amtrak $3.40 to serve each of these sodas.
This follows a House Transportation Committee hearing on the matter. Chairman Mica has vowed to continue his work to eliminate the waste, fraud and abuse of taxpayer dollars. More information can be found at www.Transportation.House.Gov.
