Lack of government subsidies means no passenger rail *at all*. It's not the subsidies that are the problem with Amtrak, it's chronic *underfunding* for 30 years that is/was the problem. This video shows what you can have with *proper* funding.
As an example, China has recently announced plans to spend about 3 times more money modernizing & expanding it's own rail system than Amtrak has received in its *entire* history.

No the Thalys trains are French (modified TGV), but the Thalys company is French-Belgian-Dutch.

@EsotericDesi The French one the world record whereas American has anything, you have that Amtrak has diesel which pollutes planet us one does not have the TGV it + fast in the world which does not pollute!

@RailRide Not only that. When you have expanded the system to a certain degree, it will pay for itself one day. E.g. Deutsche Bahn makes a profit of $1 billion every year. The subsidies make traveling cheaper and even for free for children.

@sausare size is no excuse for a complete lack of an intercity (and intracity) rail transportation. In the United States, there are dozens of European sized corridors perfectly suited for High Speed Rail, yet they are not developed because our leaders do not prioritize such things. Meanwhile, countries like China are far outpacing our modernization plans, which have been lacking since the 1940's when rail started to decline in the United States.
The only clear solution is to nationalize the RR.

sad that the Railjet is not driving there, than it would be complete. Railjet has 3 classes and it is now the newest and "modernst" in europe.

Because the US is so huge and advance, you do not need such a common system. Airplane is enough. If you have a chance, you should try different high-speed trains.
