A higher angle would have been nice in order to actually see the dag boil, change colors and get contrasty.

Haha, no they didn't use blowtorches in the 19th century for gilding. The traditional way was to use an alcohol lamp.
Many present-day daguerreotypists use Mercury. I don't. There is a way of making daguerreotypes without using Mercury. That process is called the Becquerel Method.
