"Basin Street Blues"
Words and Music by Spencer Williams
Performed by The Louisiana Rhythm Kings
Recorded June 11, 1929, New York
Personnel:
Red Nichols - trumpet
Jack Teagarden - trombone, vocal
Pee Wee Russell - clarinet
Bud Freeman - tenor sax
Joe Sullivan - piano
Dave Tough - drums
Between 1926 and 1932, Nichols made an enormous number of recordings under such names as the Five Pennies, the Charleston Chasers, The Red Heads, The Wabash Orchestra, Red and Miff's Stompers and the Louisiana Rhythm Kings. Nichols lead larger bands on some records and headed the orchestras for the shows "Strike up the Band" and "Girl Crazy."
Teagarden's vocal on Basin Street Blues gave him a permanent lien on the number, and it was to remain one of those most requested of him for the rest of his life in addition to "The Stars Fell on Alabama."
As always, lovely track and video to match.
Top work here.
Best wishes
