After forty years of captivity, 'Perchance to Dream' offers a new perspective in the life of Miami Sea Aquarium's star performer, Lolita the Killer Whale. She dazzles and she amazes; but what happens when the lights go off and the audience departs? What goes through the mind of the world's top predator turned circus clown? Solace Skies Productions invites you to take a journey into the life of a performing animal and ask the moral questions if whether captivity for sake of amusement is worth its price.
----------------------
In light of the recent tragedy involving Tillikum, I felt it was appropriate to final release my animated short, "Perchance to Dream" in order to give a different perspective on the life of a Killer Whale in captivity.

What a gorgeous and amazing film! How profound that I have watched it today as we all wait for word on Tokitae (Lolita). I found myself hoping that this is how our beautiful girl dreams, Heaven will reach you in one way or the other sweet girl! Great job Lauren!

I've always loved orcas, as do my daughters. Some would say captivity is better because they get cared for, but really it's not natural for them. So as much as I love to see them perform, I'd still have to say "leave them be". Nice vid!

Very touching. I am privileged enough to see the southern residents almost everyday as part of my job, and it breaks my heart that Lolita had what they have taken from her. I think she remembers her former life too, and this animation made me tear up a little.
On a more technical note, great work with the animating the movement of an orca, its rather accurate. Well done.

cute animation. I saw that you created this from rocky mountain college. I was thinking of going there, that's how I found this animation. I'm not so sure now after seeing the unrealistic quality of the flow and movement of the character animation and water particles used for splashing and all. I love Orca whales, they are one of my favorite creatures, I've painted a lot of them, but the animation needs some work. Nice story line and very touching though.

beautifuly done one possiblely stupid question the whale at the end the one with the bent fin is it one perticular whale or is it just a random whale with a bent fin?
namuchildtake2 1 year ago
I keep trying to respond to this post, but youtube hasn't been letting me. Anyway, in regards to your question: That's very observant of you to notice that. The whale with the bent dorsal fin is actually Hugo, Lolita's old tank mate. :)
