@cutandpaste1 You're quite correct. I'm English and went to New York in 2004. I simply don't recognise the description Peter Cook gives. I certainly didn't feel threatened and I don't recall it being particularly seedy.

Amazing raconteur and wit.

Stephen Fry is probably his nearest "descendent" these days. Hilarious and erudite, but maybe without the acid edge to him.

Funny how Times Square was then described as "seedy" and dodgy, whereas now it's about as edgy as visiting Disneyland on a Sunday afternoon.
