Students enrolled in the School of Engineering's Mechanics of Materials course competed on April 27 to see which bridge design would hold the most weight in bricks. The competition, an annual tradition, is part of the students' final project as they must construct bridges from four sheets of poster board, eight popsicle sticks, string, Elmer's glue, and two sewing needles. The completed bridge not only had to meet certain specifications but it also had to have pleasing aesthetic qualities.

During the competition, students balanced bricks on the bridge until it collapsed to test its strength. The winning team's bridge held 14 bricks before succumbing to the weight. For their efforts, the team was awarded the coveted Mechanics of Materials Gold Brick Award. The winning team included Mechanical Engineering students Dave Perley, Mike Emery, and Mike Gleick.
