In the presence of Her Majesty The Queen, Hayley Westenra ヘイリー 海莉 sings the World Premiere of the hymn "For The Fallen" composed by Karl Jenkins, at The Festival of Remembrance. The reading is by Bernard Cribbins. The performance took place on November 13th 2010 at the Royal Albert Hall in London and was broadcast on BBC 1 TV and BBC1 HD the same day.

Here is a transcript of the introduction to the performance by BBC announcer Huw Edwards:

"In the final year of the Second World War, a young airman lost his life on a mission over Berlin. It was Pilot Officer Alfryn Jenkins, whose nephew is the eminent composer Karl Jenkins.

For this year's Festival Karl Jenkins has composed a new musical setting for Binyon's timeless words, For The Fallen; it is dedicated to his uncle's memory.

As we prepare to lay the Altar of Drums, can we please give a warm welcome to Hayley Westenra and to Bernard Cribbins, thank you."

Here are the words, by the English poet Laurence Binyon (1869-1943), as performed on this occasion:

With proud thanksgiving, a mother for her children,
England mourns for her dead across the sea.
Flesh of her flesh they were, spirit of her spirit,
Fallen in the cause of the free.

Solemn the drums thrill; Death august and royal
Sings sorrow up into immortal spheres,
There is music in the midst of desolation
And a glory that shines upon our tears.

They went with songs to the battle, they were young,
Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted;
They fell with their faces to the foe.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them...

This song by Hayley Westenra appears on the CD "The Armed Man - A Mass For Peace - Anniversary Edition" (2010) by Karl Jenkins. It can be purchased from Amazon.co.uk HMV.com iTunes and all good music sellers.

  • For the Fallen by Karl Jenkins is on the new special edition EMI CD of The Armed Man. There’s info on Boosey dot com / Jenkins

  • @7191hawkes In case anyone is wondering, I am happy to leave your comment on display as it's directly relevant to this performance. I have added a note about its general availability on CD to the end of the uploader comments.

  • There is a minor typo in the video description. It's 'condemn', not 'contemn'.

  • @Medeasbiggestfan As others have said, there is some debate about condemn/contemn. I am currently leaning towards "condemn" but I will not change it until I am sure. We may have to ask Hayley (or Karl Jenkins!) in due course what she actually sang...

  • @hwivid After further investigation and a discussion in the HWI forum, I have now amended "contemn" to "condemn", which is probably what Hayley sang.

  • Hayley! She is The Queen!

  • This is one of the most beautiful things I have ever heard. Very moving. Hayley's performance was perfect - the high note at 3:22! Bernard Cribbins delivered his speech with such excellent expression. I'm a very proud Hayley fan right now!

  • This is so beautiful! She's amazing. Had the pleasure meeting her some years ago, at Tyne Cot Cemetery. We will remember them.

  • Hayley's performance is never less than the best of the best!

  • @musigirl1986

But it sounds like she sings 'condemn'.

  • @Medeasbiggestfan 'Contemn' is the old English spelling and appears spelled that way in the 1611 publication of the Holy Bible.

  • This is wow awesome , Hayley is truly talented she can sing everything she wants to. Love her voice , She is nr 1

  • I looooooooooove Hayley's music! She's an awesome artist and maintains a great image with her sweet disposition and professionalism.

  • The earliest published version has "condemn", although I have heard both used commonly. What cannot be denied is that this is an extremely beautiful setting of Lawrence Binion's poem, sung most beautifully!

  • @Arnetsew It is a tradition going back for centuries that soldiers in the field, without recourse to their chapels or churches on Sunday, would lay their drums neatly, consecrate them by laying their standards on them, and use them as an altar.
